FBI Computer Forensics

Federal law enforcement agencies have been at the forefront in terms of developing the ability to respond to, investigate, and conduct forensic examinations in crimes involving technology. One agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has developed Computer Analysis and Response Teams (FBI CART) in many of its larger offices. And, FBI computer forensics methods continue to evolve. They must evolve in order to be able to handle current criminal activity.

These specially trained agents and examiners are experts at responding to crimes involving technology. These offenses include the FBI’s main priorities; terrorism, corruption, technology offenses, economic crimes, and organized crime.

Other federal agencies have also been working on improving their ability to respond to computer incidents. The Department of Homeland Security has several regional labs dedicated to cooperative law enforcement task forces dedicated to investigating hi-tech crimes and forensically examining digital media in many different types of offenses. Military and intelligence agencies, concerned with the protection of our country’s most important interests, have always been at the forefront of the forensic movement.
