Some of the worst types of cybercrimes committed today are just started to hit the awareness of lawmakers, although the public has known about them since the advent of the web. Cyber stalking and cyber bullying are two crimes that can have a devastating effect on people. The police and other officials don’t always take these crimes seriously, and that has led to some terrible events. Most people have heard of the suicides caused by constant abuse at the hands of bullies, and occasionally those cyber stalkers take their fantasy offline and visit people’s homes. It’s a scary and dangerous situation, and some states, such as California, are finally adding laws that make these things illegal.

What is Cyber Stalking?

Cyber stalking is quite similar to traditional stalking, only this individual targets people online. The stalker will follow the victim’s online movements, use aliases to try to befriend them on different social networking sites and send constant emails. While it might sound like simple pestering at first, the communication with these stalkers will often turn dark when affections aren’t returned. If they see that you’ve gone out with your friends or a date, they may become jealous and the stalking may increase and take on a more frightening tone.

What is Cyber Bullying?

Cyber bullying mostly affects younger children and teenagers, although adults can be victimized as well. In some cases, a child’s peers at school use the Internet to torment and harass others. They will often develop a pack mentality, and one bully quickly becomes a dozen or more, all of them attacking the child online. Of course, some rather twisted adults can pile on the abuse as well, even when they know that it is a child they are bullying.

While it’s fortunate that it seems as though something will finally be done about these types of activities, the help isn’t coming soon enough.

Many people seem surprised that criminals have taken to the Internet to scam people, but it should come as no shock. People have always tried to find ways to take things that don’t belong to them and to cause other people misery. It’s only natural that it made its way to the Internet. Fortunately, there are those who take these crimes seriously and who have the skills to combat the criminals. However, the computer forensics specialists are facing a number of challenges that make this task difficult.

One of the biggest problems is also something that many people love about technology. It evolves and changes rapidly, and that means the forensic specialists have to adapt, as well.

30 years ago, the walkman was a popular device that people carried with them to listen to cassette tapes. 15 years ago, people were using their CD walkmans. Less than a decade ago, people began using dedicated MP3 players for their music. Today, our phones can store music, movies, documents, connect to the web and more. Our reliance and love of technology means that criminals who understand tech will be able to attack accounts, access data, steal money and more with ease.

The digital forensics specialist needs to make sure that he or she is up to date on all of the latest computer technology and devices. They need to be able to work with more than just a traditional computer since smart phones and tablets are so popular.

Another one of the challenges that the world is facing is that there is an overwhelming need for these types of investigators, but there simply aren’t enough of them out there. More people need to take up this career in order to combat the thieves and criminals that are seemingly running rampant and doing as they please.

The opportunities for those with a degree in computer forensics are vast. It’s possible to work for the police or FBI, or to work for a private company. When a specialist has some time under his or her belt, it’s even possible to freelance and become an independent contractor. The pay is great, and with plentiful job opportunities, it’s no wonder that more people want to travel down this career path. However, you have to make sure that you have the right qualifications and the right education first.

Those who enter this field are meticulous and patient. They understand that much of their work is going to be working with computers rather than people, yet they know that they have to have good interpersonal skills. Because of the nature of the job, it’s also important for them to be able to handle themselves during a trial. Those who have those personality qualifications will also have to go through the appropriate schooling.

Getting a degree through a traditional university or an online school is possible, and there are a number of good schools out there offering these specialized degrees now. It’s important to choose a school that has full accreditation. However, if you want to enter the field of law enforcement, you might want to have even more education. Getting a degree in criminal justice in addition to the degree in computer forensics will be a plus on your side when you are interviewing.

After the degree, most digital forensics experts decide that they should also have certification. The Certified Computer Examiner (CCE) and Certified Computer Forensics Examiner (CCFE) are two of the most popular certifications to have.

Once they have the degrees and certificates they need, the world is wide open in terms of jobs. This is one of the fastest growing job opportunities in the United States and abroad.

Computer forensics specialists do more than just work in law enforcement, although most people automatically think of the police or FBI when they hear the word forensics. Quite a large number of digital forensics experts are actually working in the private sector for companies that need help because of computer fraud and theft. They will also work for other government agencies not directly related to law enforcement, and in some cases, they will work on their own by becoming a private consultant. The forensics expert will be able to help these companies and agencies in a variety of different ways.

One of the most common tasks for a computer forensics specialist working for a company is to retrieve data if software or hardware fails. Some IT professionals may be able to do this, but those who have experience in forensics will usually be able to find the data and recover it more quickly and in more instances. They also can find unauthorized entry into a network, and they will be able to determine how the person got into the system and what they did once they were there. The experts will be able to know if anything was stolen as well.

Digital forensics experts will be able to track down and gather evidence against employees who may be misusing computers or funneling data to competition on the network. Even when an employee tries to delete files and traces of their misdeeds, the evidence remains and the experts will be able to find it.

Another way that the specialists can help is by designing tests to check on the security of the system. They will be able to find any chinks in the armor and then come up with ways of fixing them.

As you can see, there are many different things that a computer forensics specialist can do beyond helping law enforcement.

After you’ve received a degree in computer forensics, it’s time to land the job of your dreams. Fortunately, the world is going to need to have more and more people who have this specialty, and you should be able to find a job without too much trouble. Of course, you have to decide which type of job you might like. In the world of digital forensics, the sky’s the limit, and there are likely to be many more types of jobs opening up in the future. Here are a few different options that might be right for you.

Working with the Police

Many people choose to get a job in law enforcement with their degree in computer forensics. It’s also a good idea to have a degree in criminal justice, as this will help you to land a better job in some cases. You can work on everything from fraud, sex crimes, theft, and murder when you work for the police. It will be nice to know that you are making a difference.

Working with the FBI

While the FBI is another area of law enforcement, you will find that the technology and the equipment that the agents use in their computer forensics labs is quite sophisticated. You can work on a number of different types of cases when you join the FBI’s forensics team, and you have the satisfaction of knowing that your job is going to be interesting.

Private Company

You have the option of working for a corporation too. In many cases, these jobs are going to pay better than the governmental jobs. You could work on intellectual property theft, cases involving corporate espionage, and more. It’s also possible to work as a consultant on your own, and this can garner an even higher paycheck.

The Internet is connecting humanity in ways never thought possible. People can find information on foreign countries and far off lands and even meet people from those areas thanks to the power of the web. However, the threat of cybercrimes is also taking hold, and there are a number of serious crimes committed on the Internet all the time. It’s up to the authorities and the tireless efforts of computer security experts and computer forensics investigators to help stop this crime. Crime on the web touches all different areas, but here are a few of the more common types of criminal activity on the web today.

Fraud – This is one of the most common types of crime on the web, and it can take many different forms. In some instances, people are using the Internet to “sell” items that don’t exist. They take money from the unsuspecting buyer and then vanish. This can happen on auction sites and even on sites that look completely legitimate.

Another way that cyber criminals are defrauding people on the web is with email cons. They send an email, claiming to be someone that the recipient knows, or the famous dethroned Nigerian prince. They request money, and some people actually send it to them!

Piracy – The problem of piracy is getting out of hand, and it’s one of the most well known types of theft over the web. People are stealing music, movies, books, software, and more. They don’t believe that it’s hurting anyone, but it certainly is hurting the creators of the properties.

Cyber Terrorism – This problem threatens to get worse. Whether hackers are infiltrating a government website or just colluding with others to gather and crash a site due to too many visitors, it’s a huge problem.

These are just three of the many different types of cybercrimes out there today. There are countless more, and it’s important to remain safe when you are on the web.

Many people don’t understand just how dangerous of a place the Internet can be, and they don’t take any measures to protect their personal information. With so much information easily gleaned, it’s like a beacon to criminals who want to steal your identity and money. These criminals aren’t the type that will wait for you in a dark alley or rob you when you’ve finished at the ATM. These criminals are just as lowly and cowardly, but they use the web to steal instead.

Computer forensics experts and law enforcement do what they can to stop these individuals, but there always seem to be more of them. However, it’s also possible to use some common sense to help lower your own risk of becoming the victim of cybercrime. Here are a few tips that can help you keep safe on the web.

First, try to use different password combinations for different accounts. This way, if you have one account compromised, you aren’t going to have to worry about the other ones. It’s also a good idea to use a complicated password rather than something that will be easier to decipher.

Second, you should always be suspicious of emails where you do not know the sender. If you open these emails, never click on one of the links, as they may lead to a dangerous website. If you receive an email from your bank, PayPal, or any other account that you have, it’s always better to double check the veracity of the email by going directly to your account or calling the company.

These are just a couple of simple, commonsense things that you can do to improve your security while you are online. This isn’t likely to protect you from all of the malicious hackers out there, but it is a start. The computer forensics experts will do their best to get the rest.

With so many people dependent upon the Internet, it’s little wonder that the criminals and terrorists of the world have started to congregate there. While most people don’t realize just how dangerous the web can really be, it’s the Wild West in terms of criminals. In fact, Eugene Kaspersky, one of the world’s leading Internet security specialists, recently said that threat of a cyber war was real and imminent.

The web already has a plethora of crime including fraud, hacking, and espionage, and it’s not likely to stop there. One of the real dangers is that some of the top cyber criminals may have offered their services to terrorists. If that were to happen, there would be chaos across the web that would spill into the real world, and it could have far-reaching effects.

Kaspersky is certainly not the only person who sees an alarming trend in the way that cybercrime is evolving. U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron also sees this as a problem that has the potential to become much larger. The attacks on national security, financial institutions and other sites happen regularly, and the governments of the world are trying to find the best way to handle these threats.

Without imposing restrictions on the way in which people use the web – as they do in China – the United States and the United Kingdom are trying to find other ways to combat cybercrimes and the possibility of an all out cyber war. It’s important for nations to begin to work together to fight these problems, and with the help of computer experts and those in the area of digital forensics, it is possible to stave off this threat. It will take time, a lot of work and a healthy dose of cooperation, certainly, but it is well worth the effort.
